Toshiba REGZA RV series TV with Active Vision II
Active Vision II
Active Vision II is our acclaimed high performance picture processing system. It has been designed to produce high quality, high definition images by enhancing core elements of a television picture:
Detail: Images are now spread over a larger number of smaller pixels compared to a conventional LCD TV. This allows highly detailed images to be produced far more accurately across all colour tones.
Colour: Active Vision reproduces colours with more tones than conventional LCD televisions, producing images with reduced banding for a smoother, more realistic colour progression.
Movement: : Picture sharpness in fast moving scenes is increased, with a reduction in the jagged edges often seen on lines and fine detail.
Contrast: The continuous monitoring and automatic adjustment of contrast, enhances detail and increases the ability of the television to represent subtle shade changes.
Toshiba ECO Panel
ECO Panel
Toshiba REGZA LCD TVs which feature EcoPanel are specially designed to consume significantly less power than a conventional LCD TV, without comprising on picture quality. Toshiba’s EcoPanel technology utilises materials of the highest possible quality and clarity to construct an LCD panel so translucent that as much as half as much light is required to illuminate it as compared to conventional panels.
A TV with a conventional LCD panel requires powerful backlights to illuminate the screen. This is where most of the power consumption comes from. By reducing the amount of light required to brighten the screen, REGZA LCD TVs with EcoPanel can deliver the same brilliant HD picture quality, with almost half the power.
With EcoPanel, you can relax knowing you LCD TV is being kind to the environment and saving you up to 45% of your TV’s energy consumption.
AutoView
AutoView technology automatically adjusts picture settings depending on not only room lighting, but also the content being watched. The ambient light sensor constantly adjusts the LCD’s backlight to provide a better viewing experience. In light rooms backlight is increased, in dark rooms backlight is dimmed.
The technology eliminates the need to constantly have to adjust the backlight brightness and colour settings in order to find the best viewing experience in all environments.
AutoView means that your REGZA LCD TV will be performing to its full potential, delivering the best possible picture quality at all times.
Dolby Volume
Dolby Volume stops those annoying fluctuations in volume during commercial breaks and when switching between channels or sources such as your DVD player or games console, providing a more enjoyable viewing experience. It also provides a full and consistent sound experience at all volume levels, even low volume.
Sound Navi
SoundNavi technology provides even stronger sound projection, enabling integrated TV speakers to powerfully direct audio to the nearest hard surface and amplify sound in the same way as freestanding TVs. You can also adjust the audio direction of TV speakers once wall-mounted.
Full Power Down
We have fitted an On/Off switch in response to the concerns expressed by many consumers who would prefer to turn their television off completely..All models are extremely energy efficient, but we take our responsibility to the environment seriously and will always do everything we can to minimise the impact our products have on our surroundings.
Digital TV
Between now and the end of 2012 the UK will be turning off all old “analogue” TV transmitters and switching your TV signal to “digital”. Digital TV offers new ways to enjoy your TV. You will have a greater choice of TV channels as well as access to additional features and services which will enhance your TV-watching experience
When the digital switch happens in your area, your older analogue TVs will no longer be able to pick up a signal. To keep your normal TV service running, you will need to convert your TVs to digital before your area’s switchover date.
Switching your home to digital is easy. All you need to do is purchase digital tuner and connect it to your analogue TV or alternatively, you can replace it with a new digital TV. All Toshiba LCD TVs carry the Digital Tick and come with Freeview built-in, making them the ideal option for preparing your home for the digital switch.

    Sony Bravia KDL40W5500U 40-inch

Sony Bravia KDL40W5500U 40-inch Widescreen Full HD 1080p LCD TV with Freeview and 100Hz Motionflow  review

    A great choice5
I took delivery of this TV 3 weeks ago to replace an older and smaller LCD model. Having been looking at the various televisions of this sort of size that are available, I made my final decision to buy this particular model based on looking in stores, careful inspection of specifications and looking widely at reviews on the internet.
As something which is going to be a major feature of my living room for quite a long time I wanted to make the right decision. Certainly there are cheaper brands, and also cheaper Sony models out there, but the Bravia 'W' range seems to be the best combination when it comes to features, quality and price.
Having used it daily I can now confirm that I think I made a wise choice. This Sony has the best colour display of any television I've seen. When you first watch it it's as if everything is suddenly in 3D - such is the depth and definition of the picture, even when using it to watch standard definition Freeview television as I usually do. I thought that I was getting a very good quality Freeview picture with my previous setup, but it is noticeably better with this Bravia. I've also invested in a Sony BDP-S350 Blu-ray player to use with this TV and watched a number of discs through that. As you'd expect the quality of the picture then is exceptional.
The sound is also surprisingly good for a TV. There's plenty of energy in the sound output and great clarity too. I can now hear things that I'd missed before - I actually got up to answer the phone at one point before realising that it wasn't mine - it was on the telly!
There's only one snag that I've found with this TV and that's a minor one. Although it has a good number of connections available to it Sony has reduced the number of SCART sockets on this model to 2. As someone who is still in the process of upgrading my televisual equipment, the rest of my equipment (except for the Blu-ray player) uses SCART connections so a third one may have been a bonus.
    Faultless5
When my trusty Trinitron (literally) went pop, I turned to amazon for my next TV purchase, having been impressed with their service and good prices over the years. I was looking for a 37" W series Sony Bravia but as this model was only £10 more expensive, it would have been rude not to go for the bigger screen. Despite specifying next day delivery, it actually took three days to arrive (via Citylink) but the extra £8.80 charge was politely and promptly refunded within three hours of my inquiry. Like all amazon deliveries, tracking was easy online. It comes with a Sony 3 year guarantee.

    OUT OF THE BOX

It was actually light enough to remove from the box on my own, though it helps if you have long arms like I do. Putting the TV on its own tabletop stand was nice and easy; you just carefully lower the TV onto it before fixing with the four screws provided. Simple. The TV swivels on the stand, which is very useful as I move around the room during the day though the viewing angle is very good anyway. Once done, putting it onto the Centurion Stand was much easier than I thought as the TV only weighs 18kg (plus it's stand of course).

    SET UP

Once plugged in, I connected it to my PVR and PS3 and powered up. It takes 30-40 minutes to set-up as it downloads the Freeview channels for its integrated tuner then you are ready to go. It is quite easy to accidentally skip this part of the set up but you can run it again from the Guide as I did so it's no problem.

    IN USE

The remote is light, functional, and refreshingly uncluttered with most of the functions being menu driven onscreen. The blue Home button puts you into a familiar PS3/PSP style horizontal menu (XrossMediaBar) which has all the detailed settings, or you can use the Options button for more basic choices.

Pressing the Scene button allows you to quickly adjust the picture (and sound) according to general, gaming, movies, sports etc. Overall, the functions and menus are quite simple and intuitive and I haven't needed to open the manual yet. The full manual can be found in the menu and there is a system update function too so this TV is fairly future proof.

I am not a big fan of the integral TV guide (Guide+), it looks a bit cheap and nasty to be honest with annoying adverts around it. You get a small window of the current channel in the top left though which is quite useful and you can set reminders etc though I will probably stick to my PVR so I can pause live TV etc so won't be using this much, same as viewers with Sky+ no doubt. It will be useful to have a third option though just in case I'm recording on two channels.

The TV has PIP - Picture in Picture so if you're playing your game you can keep a beady eye on your TV and not miss the start of your favourite prog. The on/off switch is a nice and light button on the side next to channel, volume buttons etc. Never has switching a TV on and off been so enjoyable.

    PERFORMANCE

    1) GENERAL TV - When I powered the TV on, it soon became clear that the TV was too good for my geriatric Humax PVR800 which uses a SCART connector and so this will soon be rectified with a 9300T (HDMI upload) or perhaps a Freesat box. I will update this review once done. The integrated Freeview tuner delivers a better output, nice and clear with good contrast and no ghosting on movement, thanks to the 100Hz refresh and Motionflow. The moral of this story is the better the input, the better the output. This TV is too good for a basic digital tuner so one with a HDMI upload or HD is the way to get the most out of it if you're picky about your picture (and you probably will be if you've spent nearly £800 on this TV).

    2) PS3 - It really shines with the PS3; colours are nice and vibrant with excellent detail and it gives you a much more involving and cinematic experience. Ratchet and Clank, a big and bright game looks amazing, despite being produced in 720p. I'm playing it through again on this TV, it's like I'm on a new game. Uncharted:Drake's Fortune (also 720p) is excellent with lush greens against the rocky outcrops showing up beautifully, ditto the water.

    3) DVDs are very good and my first BluRay purchase, Planet Earth is jaw-dropping in places.

    4) Sound is good, excellent in fact, very clear but just lacking in bass when playing music. As I intend to use my PS3 as my media centre I will look into additional speakers of some sorts soon.

    INPUTS

Amongst many others, there are :

    4 x HDMI (2 side, 2 rear)
    2 x SCART
    VGA (for laptop, PC)
USB (view photos, other media etc)
RJ45 - for connecting to your router and other wireless DNLA compliant devices such as laptops

    VERDICT

This is a stunning and very up to date piece of kit that I am very pleased with and am enjoying very much. I cannot find fault with it at all (apart from the messy TV guide), hence the 5 stars.

    Enjoy authentic cinematic experiences
Cinema Mode is a new picture setting developed in collaboration between BRAVIA and Sony Pictures Entertainment. It allows films to be viewed as close to the original director's cut as possible. Cinema Mode precisely reproduces details such as natural skin tone, lighting, colour and contrast. In 24p True Cinema mode films can be watched as the director intended for the big screen - at 24 frames per second. Standard TVs use 25 frames a second which means they play back 'faster' than they do in the cinema.
    Clearer, more life-like colours
Reds and greens are notoriously difficult to reproduce on an LCD screen. Live Colour intelligently boosts these colours making sure the images you see on your BRAVIA TV are bright, vibrant and realistic. Connect a compatible camera or camcorder and the TV will automatically switch to optimum settings for displaying photos and reproduce their full, realistic texture and colour.

    Love it!5
I purchased this TV at the weekend and after our first few days of use I can honestly say that I love it. I've done a lot of research and decided on a short list of models but nothing can compare to actually standing in front of a bunch of TVs and seeing the picture quality. This was by far the best picture in our price range. The build quality is excellent and the image quality is fantastic, especially for the price. Remember that you do get what you pay for so you won't get the same picture as you would if you were spending £1000+ but for everyday use and HD playback it's fantastic.

The internet side of things is a great feature. Streaming content from youtube is nice but it doesn't stream the HD content from youtube, so hopefully that will come in a future update. Overall I'm really pleased with the picture and build quality. It's excellent, so much so that my siblings have both bought exactly the same model
    More than just a TV!!5
Bought this recently after much research and do not regret it for one minute. Started looking at the previous KDL5500 and KDL5810 range which provide a great picture and are currently discounted by a number of retailers but put off by the cost of installing Free-sat on the 5810 and also both use Sony's previous AppliCast solution for streaming internet content. This was never developed in the UK providing a calander, clock and not a lot else. The new Sony Internet interface included with this set is brilliant with some great content such as You Tube, Channel 5 replay and Love Film with most of it free apart from Love Film that requires a subscription. Missing IPlayer though but hopefully one for the future as it is available on the Playstation. The TV can also link to your PC by downloading an application onto your PC streaming audio and video. This additional functionality requires an LAN and Internet connection of course but I am lucky in having this existing. You can add a wireless dongle for approx £70 if required or use Ethernet over mains adapters which may work out cheaper.

Sony Bravia KDL32EX403U 32-inch Widescreen Full HD 1080p LCD Internet TV with Freeview HD  review

    Customer Reviews

    Solution to problem mentioned4
I retired my 12 year-old Panasonic CRT set when Freeview HD became available. Only Sony had a 32" set on the market.
The only problem I had with the set-up was that, initially,I couldn't get the batteries into the remote! The case wouldn't slide open until I also pressed the Power/Standby button on its back. Thereafter, the automatic set-up was fine.
The printed 'Operating Instructions' is a leaflet which directs one to the 'Instructions Manual' built into the set, which results in a lot of tiresome, jumping back and forth. The Manual is a general one, and refers to some features that are not on this set. The 'Options' button enables the user to make a wide range of adjustments to both vision and sound. Vision quality is excellent, whilst sound is average(being half-deaf, I found the 'Clear Voice' option merely shrill). Some of the buttons on the remote are too small.
My only major criticism is one that I suspect is applicable to all Widescreen TVs(this is my first) - screen format. The default setting is Widescreen, and there are four other settings(Smart, which is a misnomer):4:3:Zoom:14:9: - If you change channels, or make an adjustment, the set switches back to Widescreen, regardless of the previous setting!
A minor viewing criticism concerns the very glossy screen surround which creates distracting reflections - Matt would have been much more sensible.
Viewing Freeview HD channels can be stunning, although very few programmes at present are genuinely HD.
I won't realise the full potential of this TV until I get a Broadband router, and a HD PVR(none available at present).
All in all, I'm very pleased with the set.
PS I later resolved the above criticism by pressing Home - Settings - Picture - Screen - (Auto Format on) - changing 4:3 Default from Smart to 4:3
    Lovely set5
Having last year changed my TV downstairs for a 40" Sony set, I was reluctant to spend more money changing the old 21" CRT upstairs in my study. However, Sony ran a deal during the World Cup to trade in old sets and I managed to get £100 off the price of the KDL32EX403U so I went for it.

The build of the set is not quite as sexy as a Samsung, but feels somehow more 'grown up', while still looking very nice in the living room. The stand is a non-swivel model, which is annoying, but does hold the TV firmly and took only 5 minutes to put together. Without this, the TV can be wall mounted as well.

Picture quality on HD is as sharp as you'd imagine with Sony. Colour is well represented and I was very impressed with the blacks from this non-LED set. On my Xbox 360 the quality was perfect for games like Gears of War 2 and Modern Warfare 2, where detail is very important. On SD the picture was less impressive until I found that turning the extra settings for picture quality off. I'm assuming these are used for HD and not SD pictures as the SD picture improved greatly. The Sony set seems to smooth out rough pixels fairly well and the SD picture is watchable, if not the best. It doesn't have the benefit of 100HZ either so on fast moving pictures some ghosting can occur. With a Humax Freesat HD box, however, picture quality on SD was greatly improved due to the box upscaling the picture.

One feature on all new Sony sets is the ability to read USB sticks or Hard Drives. I added my portable 130GB Hard Drive to the side of the TV and it read it immediately. MP4 and DIVX video worked fine, a few lesser known formats didn't run though. Pictures and Music also worked well from the Hard Drive. The TV also allows you to stream from a computer, which I've tried and it works if you can fiddle around and set windows up.

Youtube, 5 on Demand, Lovefilm and several European internet channels are also built in if you plug in an Ethernet cable. Youtube worked well but I found that the search was a bit fiddly on the remote. It's a shame that there is no BBC iPlayer as with other sets.

One last feature which impressed me was the Picture Frame mode. It uses a very low amount of power but produces a lovely quality picture (several supplied, but you can use your own) which actually looks like you have a picture frame. I can imagine this would be perfect if you had the TV on the wall in your sitting room.

Sound is fairly good, the bass felt solid and voices were clear, though it's never going to replace a separate set of speakers. The surround effects are actually pretty good too, supporting Dolby formats and changing 5.1 and DD to a more simple surround method but giving a good result from the two speakers at the base of the unit.

Overall, then, this is a great little set at a good price. Those using it for 360 or PS3 will find that it delivers well. People with just an SD signal may not get the most out of the TV though until Freeview HD comes to their area.
    Brilliant!5
Can't fault it. SD Freeview and Hd work a treat for me. The network functionality of this TV is fantastic, and I would recommend hooking it up to your PC via HDMI to use BBC iPlayer and whatnot, as the built in Bravia Internet Video feature is still a little limited, though developing well.
